Rowing DVDs

There are a number of types of film or DVD you can acquire for your use while you row.  (Most are about rowing outdoors or training on technique to improve rowing outdoors, so they may or may not appeal to you as an indoor rower.)  Here is a sample listing of some of the types:

  • FISA, the international oversight body for rowing, makes available DVDs of world competition each year, including the Olympics. If you want to see some of the highest level of rowing competition (and hear commentary), try these.  They are not cheap, usually costing about $60.  You can find them through many purveyors of rowing gear and information.  Check, for example, with www.row2k.com and www.regattasport.com
  • Josh Crosby has a nice five-minute YouTube video providing instruction on the basics of rowing technique.  Take a look at it at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0uUhGKwhBA
  • Xeno Mueller offers training videos through his web site at http://indoor-rowing.blogspot.com/
  • Rowing machine manufacturers offer short DVDs on basic rowing technique.
  • Craftsbury Sculling Camp has produced a set of videos on basic sculling technique and drills.  These are available through Craftsbury Outdoor Center (contact information at www.craftsbury.com ).
  • A video on Cal Rowing, All for One, is available from www.JLRacing.com
  • Historical videos are available on topics ranging from the start of women’s crew at Yale (A Hero for Daisy) to Olympic champions.  Look for them at www.JLRacing.com, www.RegattaSport.com and other sites.
  • You can find many other videos on YouTube and from local clubs that show particular races, club activities, team history and more.

While these videos can educate and entertain, they tend not to show the perspective of the rower on the water.  See the following video clips for some examples of video taken from the stern of a racing shell during practice rows and races (plus one of racers taken from a bridge overlooking the race).
