Food and Drink

Here is my favorite quote on this subject:

“For me, though, the slice of meat loaf and the baked potato were plenty. What is it? Medical? The more you do, the less you need? I don’t get it.”

Smithy Ide, after beginning his journey in The Memory of Running - Ron McLarty

This speaks to the fact that when we exercise, our bodies begin to tell us what they want.  And what they want is not the same old foods and quantities that we ate when we were not exercising.

In general, you are likely to find as you exercise more regularly that you want three things:

  • -Better quality food;
  • -Food that enhances how good you feel; and
  • -Food at times and in quantities that supports your exercise and the feeling of being fit and energetic.

There are many issues and lots of good advice in the field of nutrition.  This short comment is not intended to discourage you from exploring them.  But just as my bias is toward getting your row in today rather than postponing it to learn more, my bias on “dieting” is to make your “diet” of daily rowing the starting point.
