With this book, my focus shifted from coaching juniors and working with parents to communicating about the health and fitness benefits of rowing for all of us as we age. When I had rowed in college and coached college and junior rowers, my focus was on competition. Rowing is well known as a tough, competitive sport. As I aged, particularly in my 40s, I found myself re-evaluating my focus with rowing. Using indoor rowing machines is a simple, inexpensive way to maintain or even improve health. Indoor rowing is easier and more accessible than rowing on the water. Anyone can do it. Yet most rowers still think of it as an experience that must be intense. And most non-rowers mistakenly think of indoor rowing as just as inaccessible and difficult as competitive outdoor rowing. We need to overcome these misconceptions. I still like to compete sometimes. But I can row indoors for my health every day without having to put myself through the rigors of preparing for competition. And so can you.
